The Global Mountain Program (GMP) is a System
Wide Program of the CGIAR system. It was established in response
to international commitments made to Agenda 21 chapter 13: ‘Managing
Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development’ and
Chapter 14: ‘agriculture’ and the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) in mountains.
The GMP acts as an umbrella program to
CGIAR activities in mountains. We work closely with regional programs
and organizations in mountains such as the African Highlands Initiative
(AHI), CONDESAN in the Andes, and with individual Centers, other
System Wide and Eco regional programs of the CGIAR, as well as with
non CGIAR organizations such as with the International Center for
Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in the Hindu Kush Himalayas.
The program aims to add value by:
- Promoting research that supports development
efforts on overriding global issues that affect mountain regions
(thematic action areas).
- Bringing together the research capacity
of CGIAR system to link closely with partners to development efforts
for mountain regions.
- Establish mechanisms that add value
though knowledge exchange for mountain groups within and between
continents.
- Engage in the International dialogue
and advocacy of mountain issues: e.g. participation in international
mountain platforms.
The program focuses on four interconnected
thematic action areas for mountains.
- Information, options for mountain communities.
- Strengthening Rural Urban Linkages for
sustainable mountain development.
- Analysis of the strengths and weaknesses
of Mountain Policies
- Reducing vulnerability caused by global
change (climate and economic) in mountains.
The programme is supported
by the Government of CANADA
